By far the most common question we are asked is regarding VoIP or IP communications. So here are a couple of short answers to questions around this issue:.
Q. What is VoIP and why should I be considering it for my company?/I need a new phone system so I need VoIP now, is that right?
A. VoIP is an acronym for “Voice Over Internet Protocol” which is a way to break down a traditional voice signal into a medium that can be routed over an IP network (the internet, for example). What makes IP communications advantageous for some businesses is that it allows you to put voice calls on your data backbone (internally externally) which can reduce Long Distance charges and simplify internal office moves. It also provides a medium for remote teleworkers to access most of the same phone system features that are available in the office allowing options for your workforce. Before you consider whether or not you need a strictly VoIP system or one that allows for both traditional phone deployment and IP, you should discuss your business needs and goals with a HunTel Account Executive to determine where VoIP technology will enhance your business practices.
Q. Will my current network support VoIP?
A. This can be determined by having a detailed discussion with your IT staff or by doing a simple network assessment. Depending on the age of your internal network wiring, you may need to made upgrades in order to support VoIP on your LAN and/or WAN.
